How it works
These medicines each work by increasing blood flow to the erectile tissue of the penis. The medicines do not have an effect on your sexual desire, but can improve your erection if you are sexually aroused.
Cialis works within 30 minutes, positive effects can last up to 36 hours
Sildenafil works within one hour, positive effects lasts 4-5 hours
Spedra works within 30 minutes, positive effects can last up to 4-5 hours
The majority of men will notice a firmer and longer lasting erection. If these medicines are ineffective, contact us via your Patient Record or your GP for further advice.
Side effects are uncommon but can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and an allergic rash. Other side effects include facial flushing, headache, light-heartedness, a stuffy nose, blurred vision, pounding heartbeat and indigestion.
Taking other medicines
Our GPs will not be able to prescribe you an erectile dysfunction medicine if you are taking nicorandil or nitrates such as GTN spray or isosorbide mononitrate tablets to treat angina.
If you are taking alpha-blockers, our GPs will not be able to prescribe this starter pack as you cannot take Cialis with alpha-blockers. Instead, our doctors may be able to prescribe you Viagra, Spedra or Levitra which are both safe to take six hours after taking alpha-blockers.
It is important that you tell us about all the medicines you are currently taking so you’re your medicines can be prescribed safely.
Erectile dysfunction could be a physical or psychological issue; or a combination of both. In many cases, there is an underlying health issue which is causing restricted blood flow to the penis. It’s important, especially in men over the age of 40, to have a physical examination with your GP.
Some men may want to try counselling to treat psychological causes of erectile dysfunction. Some sexual health clinics (also known as GUM clinics) offer this service if you are interested in counselling.
